More than 40 security software technologists and anti-malware testers from around the world recently met in Bilbao, Spain to formalize the charter of the Anti-Malware Testing Standards Organization, or AMTSO. The formation of AMTSO has been driven by industry-wide concern about the increasing mismatch between what anti-malware technologies actually do, and the testing methodologies used to evaluate them. As anti-malware solutions become more complex, many existing tests are unable to evaluate product effectiveness properly, resulting in product reviews that are sometimes incomplete, inaccurate and misleading.

Researchers Find Hole in Trend Micro AntiVirus Library

A critical flaw has been discovered in Trend Micro's AntiVirus Library, which is used by all the company's desktop, server, and gateway security products. The library is also used by ISPs and e-mail services such as Hotmail, and in third-party security products that use licensed versions of the antivirus software, greatly widening the scope of the new alert. The full list of Trend Micro products affected by the flaw runs to a total of 30 products. According to the company advisory, the problem lies with the way the library handles files compressed using the ARJ standard. "Thus, it is possible to create a specially crafted ARJ archive file that overwrites data after the allocated 512-byte buffer. This specially crafted file could possibly execute an arbitrary code," continues the warning, a technically accurate but opaque way of saying that a virus code could in certain circumstances be hidden inside an archive file and not be detected.

Trend Micro Snatches Hotmail Account From McAfee

Trend has long been the number three antivirus software provider, behind Symantec and McAfee. The company's products accounted for 14.2 percent of the worldwide revenue generated by antivirus software sales in 2003, according to research firm IDC.

Trend Promises E-mail, Just No P-Mail

Antivirus firm Trend Micro unwittingly targeted the letter "P" with a recent rules update, forcing all email containing the objectionable letter into quarantine. According to their knowledge base article titled Solution 14638, "Antispam Rule 915 unintentionally blocks some legitimate emails scanned by InterScan eManager and ScanMail eManager." The cause? The letter P.

Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security Suite 2006

A previous version of Trend Micro's PC-cillin Internet Security Suite earned PC World's Best Buy distinction in June 2004's "Bigger Threats, Better Defense" security roundup. This time around, however, disappointing performance scores outweighed superior interface design to drag this product's overall rank to ninth out of the ten antivirus products tested for "The New Virus Fighters."
